Hunt says economy will ‘soon turn corner’ on growth

The chancellor has said the UK’s economy is recovering and is expected to “soon turn the corner” on growth.

Jeremy Hunt made the claim on Wednesday as he delivered his Spring Budget.

He said the economy have “turned a corner on inflation” and that progress will extend to growth.

He quoted OBR figures that forecast the economy to grow by 0.8% this year and 1.9% next year – 0.5% higher than it initially predicted in its Autumn forecast.

Hunt added that this growth is forecast to continue on this trend until 2027.

The chancellor said the UK has grown faster than three of Europe’s largest economies – Germany, France and Italy – since 2010.

“We will continue to grow faster than them for next five years ahead,” he said.

“We have made good progress on PM’s three economic pledges: inflation halved, debt is falling in line with our fiscal rules, and growth is 1.5 percentage points higher than predicted.”
